Tailor SmithMrs. MurdockAP Literature and Composition April 121, 2014In the novel Brave New World, Aldous Huxley portrays a superficial society in which people give up their authentic humanity to experience artificial happiness. Most people conform to society because they need and want the acceptance of others, turning conformity into society's new drug. The cookie cutter theory within the novel is as strong and alive in today's society as it has ever been. Dystopia is like a utopia, a place where everything is perfect, except everything isn't perfect. In an attempt to make everything perfect, things went horribly wrong, like society in Brave New World. In any novel where the world is supposed to be super perfect, you believe that the world is incredibly messed up, you also believe that the main character of the novel will be the only person, or one of the few people, to recognize how messed up things are. This is what happens in Brave New Worlds society, no one has to feel pain, fear death or go through anything, even the slightest discomfort, and everything is extremely stable. There is a lot of sex and drugs to keep people happy or totally unaware. The point Huxley wanted to convey in Brave New World was that when you sacrifice one hundred percent freedom, bad things happen. This novel asks the question: what if everything could be controlled? Down to a person's genetics, what did they think or what did they buy? What if God, art and movement were eliminated? The answer is dystopia. Huxley's number one theme is the consequences of absolute power and total control. In the novel the world establishes control with the use of technology, genetic engineering and mind control...... middle of paper...... New World portrays a superficial society in which people give up their authentic humanity to feel artificial happiness. Most people conform to society because they need and want the acceptance of others, turning conformity into society's new drug. The cookie cutter theory contained in the novel is as strong and alive in today's society as it has ever been. Around the world, citizens are very happy and satisfied; they have everything they want, from insane amounts of sex and drugs to unlimited consumer goods, but they don't even bother to acknowledge let alone question their lack of freedom, but this relentless control of the iron cloud has its consequences . Society in Brave New World is completely stripped of values, morals, emotions, art, or any kind of individuality. Not only is it a society that has lost its way, but its citizens have actually lost their humanity.
