In the short story “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathanial Hawthorn, Goodman embarks on a journey where he says goodbye to his young, new wife and ventures into an unknown evil. In the woods, he discovers that not everyone is as trustworthy as they seem, not even his loving wife. Although Goodman was not in a good place physically and religiously, he realized that he could not go back; he had to move forward to help save Faith but it was too late. He had chosen the devil's path, or so it seemed. Because Faith allegorically represents innocence and truth, the betrayal of Goodman Brown's wife, Faith, causes him to lose faith not only in her, but also in religion. On a Halloween night, young Goodman Brown went into the woods knowing he was headed somewhere terrible but he didn't. he wants to admit it to anyone, not even himself. Faith tried to keep him home with her, but she couldn't. «The pact he has made with Satan is universal, strengthened by signs such as the innocence with which he convinces himself that he can deviate from his alliance and the assurances he offers of his good intentions» (Levy). He was an ordinary man struggling with his religious faith and relied on his wife's support. Goodman believed that he could enter the forest and still come out as an honorable and righteous man, but he knew that going into the forest and following the path would be the beginning of making a deal with the devil. Faith was a woman who Nathaniel Hawthorne described as pretty, delicate, and young with pink ribbons in her blonde hair. Hawthorne also mentioned that his name was appropriate (Levy). In the story, Mr. Brown says, “well, she's a blessed angel on earth; and after this night I will cling to her skirts and follow her to heaven. ...... center of the card ...... also symbolized both white and red, a mix of good and bad (Haddock). Unfortunately in the end the red takes over and the purity is no longer there. He took off his ribbons and joined the devil. This night caused both Faith and Goodman Brown to lose everything. Goodman Brown's entire life was focused on questioning everyone because of the experience with his wife. He lived a miserable life until his death. Without faith there is no happiness. After that night he became a grumpy man who didn't go to church or talk to anyone. This proves that trust is everything. If Faith hadn't gone into the woods and betrayed Goodman, he would have returned to her with a guilty heart, which could have been mended, but instead she went into the woods and drugged him further. He needed her to be there for him in his difficult times. Young Goodman Brown simply lost his faith.
