Albizzia chinensis, Stereospermum tetragonum, Mussaenda macrophylla and Callicarpa arborea are traditionally used by the local populations of Mizoram, in north-east India, for the treatment of numerous ailments (skin diseases, fish venom, as an antipyretic, snake bites and abdominal colic). . Mizoram is recognized as a biodiversity hotspot with a wide variety of medicinal plants used for treating a number of ailments by the local population, but scientific information on their bioactivity and medicinal richness is not taken into account. A study was initiated to evaluate the antimicrobial properties and reducing properties of these plants in different organic extracts. The total phenolic content of the extracts is determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent test. In vitro antioxidant activity measured by FRAP method. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content vary among all selected plants. S. tetragonum showed the highest antioxidant activity while Albizzia chinensis showed the highest total phenolic content. The total phenolic content of A. chinensis leaves ranged from 13.282 to 42.714 mg GAE/g DW. For the antibacterial screening, a one gram (+) bacterium (Staphylococcus aureus -MTCC 960) and a one gram (-) bacterium (Escherichia coli- MTCC 739) were used while for the antifungal tests, two phytopathogenic fungi, namely say Fusarium graminarum (MTCC-1893) and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri (MTCC-2791) were used. The ethanolic extract of A. chinensis showed the highest antibacterial activity (14 mm and 12 mm, respectively) against both tested bacteria. High activity of superoxide dismutase (9.235±0.586), catalase (93.212±1.046) and ascorbic acid oxidase (1.663±0.242) was also recorded in A. chinensis. In this study we concluded that A. chinensis has a high anti...... paper medium ...... ng capacity thanks to its hydroxyl group and contributes directly to the antioxidant action. Polyphenolic compounds are suggested to have inhibitory effects on mutagenesis and carcinogenesis in humans [7]. An antioxidant will slow or prevent the oxidation of other molecules, which produces free radicals, which start chain reactions that break down cells. Antioxidants can remove intermediate free radicals and thus stop the reaction [8]. The aim of this study was to investigate the total phenol content, iron reducing activity/antioxidant power in vitro and antimicrobial properties of Albizzia chinansis, Stereospermum tetragonum, Mussaenda macrophylla, Callicarpa arborea. Here we report the results of such studies in order to provide useful information for future investigations towards the discovery of new, potent and safe antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds..
