Topic > Persuasive Essay on Drunk Driving - 1843

“Just one more” is a phrase many use when going out for drinks with friends or celebrating something special in life. Until recently, drunk driving was a harmful crime that went unnoticed by all those who were not affected by the consequences and tragedies that came with it. Statistical estimates show that “in the United States, alcohol-related traffic crash rates dropped from 60% in 1982 to 32% in 2006. Recent findings, however, indicate that drunk driving continues to be a significant problem ” (Gieck). Although alcohol-related crash rates have decreased, these numbers may still decline. Every life lost, every casualty caused and every dollar spent can be prevented. Drunk driving is a choice that someone makes, it is one hundred percent avoidable. The actions of those who get behind the wheel drunk are the accomplice of the situation. Individuals who consume alcohol irresponsibly and at times when it may put the lives of others at risk must take responsibility for their actions and think of the innocent motorists and victims they share the road with. Unfortunately, the statistics show the group of young people involved in the epidemic. Despite the progress made, “college students and young adults represent a population at increased risk for alcohol-related traffic crashes due to re-issue rates of excessive episodic alcohol use” (Gieck). The government must take the lead and limit late-night bar activity, implement consequences for repeat offenders, and disseminate programs that educate those who are ignorant about drunk driving and alcohol-related deaths. As society becomes more aware of the alarming rate of alcohol-related accidents, there have been many contributions...... middle of paper...... out of control to maintain normalcy. Many violators had to pay fines and make court dates to take responsibility for their actions. Nothing positive comes out of drunk driving, so why do people feel the need to do it? It's because they're afraid to admit that their addiction has reached an all-time high to the point that they can no longer control it. Because of this nasty problem many children will have to go to bed and say goodnight to mom and dad by kissing a photo of their parents that once existed before they became a victim. The lives of drunk drivers are usually the ones that aren't affected as much as the ones they choose to involve. It's something we can all do to prevent. With the use of ignition locks installed in cars, the creation of programs and the breaking of financial constraints, we can address this horrible problem that unfortunately exists today.
