Andy Warhol was a famous American artist best known for starting the pop art movement in the 1960s. Born in 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Warhol was a quiet and sickly child who spent much of 1935 in bed due to illness, during this time his mother gave him coloring books to keep him occupied, this is probably when his passion began for colorful art. Before starting his career as a pop artist, Warhol created commercial art, illustrating shoe advertisements and setting up window displays for various shops, this art earned him some fame, especially his illustrations done in a smeared ink style that people he liked it. Consumerism was a product. of the “swinging 60s”, as they are called, this was a revolutionary period not only for American society but for society around the world. It was a time when all boundaries were ignored, the contraceptive pill was made available for the first time giving women complete sexual freedom, it was also a time when people were heavily protesting against the Vietnam War “make love, not war” was a quote commonly heard said and written on signs. Fashion was changing dramatically from the conservative style of the 1940s/50s with the introduction of the mini skirt which was now included in most women's wardrobes. Consumerism is defined as a “social and economic order based on the systematic creation and promotion of the desire to purchase goods and services in ever-increasing quantities” (www.slideshare.net). This movement was the mass production of low-value goods, meaning people could now go to a store owned by a large company and buy everything they needed instead of having to get it from small-scale sellers. Celebrity culture and worship was also a… medium of paper… a reflection of society and its aspects as a whole. These aspects had to do with the revolutionary change that was happening in society at the time, consumerism was an important part of this change, which is why it heavily influenced Warhol's work. During interviews with Andy Warhol he didn't give much information about his art, during an interview in 1966 Warhol asked the interviewer to give him both his question and the answer to the question because he simply didn't have an answer. It could be said that this is due to the fact that the art Warhol produced was not entirely his own idea, but he took his ideas from external sources which were the newly formed society and growing consumerism.
