Topic > The Pros and Cons of Capital Punishment - 758

Although criminal justice is supposed to protect citizens in surrounding areas, it can sometimes be a dangerous way for miscommunication to occur and things to be done or said wrongly. The death penalty is an example of this incidence. For those who support the death penalty, capital punishment is in line with the United States Constitution while providing fairness and justice for all; the death penalty is also more cost-effective than the alternative punishment. While those who oppose the death penalty consider it to be an unjust, ineffective and immoral form of punishment. Over seventy percent of voters support the death penalty, and according to followers of capital punishment, capital punishment supports our society ((Sharp, 1997) Ernest Van den Haag, law professor, believes that the death penalty is a form of punishment that should be applied to those who violate the freedom of other individuals. Van den Haag argues that the Constitution does not yet apply the death penalty it merely grants elected officials the power to authorize capital punishment measures ” (Haag, 1968). “There are some defendants who have earned the maximum punishment that our society has to offer by committing murder under aggravating circumstances. I believe that life is sacred murder claim that society has no right to prevent the murderer from killing again. In my opinion, society has not only the right, but the duty to act in self-defense to protect the innocent," argues the... middle of paper... ...person on death row. There have been several cases in which evidence has been shown to exonerate those sentenced to death. Furthermore, with pre-trial expenses, expert witnesses, and other expenses involved in a death penalty case, it would cost taxpayers more money to execute prisoners than to imprison them for life. And for me too, I think it's much worse to be imprisoned for life than to be executed. I think criminals should pay the price by living in a prison cell for the rest of their lives. The death penalty is unjust, equally sinful. and as improper as the crime that was committed. The Constitution of the United States includes and protects the rights and freedoms of our people, but makes capital punishment acceptable. What kind of country have we become that intentionally taking someone's life has become acceptable? fatal attraction that should be abolished.
