Topic > Poetry Analysis: An Analysis of 'The Icarus Girl'

'The Icarus Girl' is Helen Oyeyemi's novel. It is the story of a little girl "Jessamy Harrison" also called "Jess". She is a shy girl. He loves reading books. She spends most of her time alone writing haiku. Sometimes he also had panic attacks. She is sensitive, possessed and has a powerful imagination. She was very lonely because there is no one her age. Over the course of the novel he read many books, fairy tales, novels, poems and plays. So, here I choose a poem "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge which was read by Jess in the novel. He loved that poem mentioned in the novel. I chose this poem because I think it was very similar to the character Helen Oyeyemi mentioned “Jess”. I also think it affects Jessamy's character. "Kubla Khan" is one of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's most famous poems. This poem details the name Kubla Khan in the foreign land of Xanadu. Similarly, in the novel Helen describes her main character “Jess”, who would go to Nigeria, which was also a foreign land for her. Nigeria is a different world for her. In this poem, the poet describes the familiar themes of the powers and complexities of nature, explores the fantastic creations of the imagination. Likewise, in the novel Jess also had a powerful imagination. In the first stanza, the poet describes an exotic garden, where the trees, gardens, hills and river, together present the beauty of nature. The poet carefully observes his surroundings. Xanadu is described more romantically in the second verse. The poet describes his own vision and the power of imagination which only comes from a successful poet. “Kubla Khan” is described in two parts. The first describes Xanadu as if the poet were actually there, experiencing the place. The poem begins... in the middle of the paper... imagination. So, I think when she read this, she also traveled with her imagination. For example, we can also see this kind of theme in the movie "Inception". How dreams affect our real life and mix with our real life. Likewise, this also happened to Jess, she was confused and stuck in the dream as if she didn't compare and didn't realize what's happening, what's happening in real life and what's happening in her dream. She came from the dream world into her real life. I also think that the whole poem "Kubla Khan" is based on Coleridge's imagination, it shows us his creativity or power of imagination. “Kubla Khan” is a poem that talks about the journey of the mind and imagination. With this poem we understand the power of words and how passionate and real dreams can be. Similarly, for the novel we can also say that the entire novel was based on a dream or imagination.
