Although a highly successful playwright, a gifted writer of poetry, and an extraordinary novelist in his early writing years, AA Milne is known throughout the world for his highly regarded children's book series, Winnie-the-Pooh. Milne's love of writing and words began at a young age, but he only embarked on this professional path after graduating from Cambridge with a degree in mathematics according to S. Ward (9). Milne was able to relate to young readers of his children's books, as well as provide a sort of distinct insight with parents and adult readers. Alan ventured well beyond children's literature, not wanting to stick with one type of writing for too long a period of time. Because Alan Alexander Milne attempted many contrasting types of work, he proved to be adept at writing a wide variety of compositions. Milne's love of literature began at a young age. John Vine Milne, AA Milne's father, was an extremely competent and highly educated schoolmaster. He was the master of a boys' school called Henley House, which was located in London. His mother was also a teacher. Alan did not prosper due to special attributes in the home, as he had two older brothers who were not as auspicious as him. Alan Alexander had real talent from a young age. His father was at home one morning teaching his two older brothers how to read a little word. Although the brothers were unable to do it, John was shocked that “three-year-old Alan could do it. 'Cat,' he said” (Ward 6). In later years, at his father's school, Alan had as a teacher a very talented author, HG Wells. Milne and his brother Kenneth loved literature together. Before Milne was a teenager, the two brothers staged plays,...... middle of paper......Alan Alexander Milne was much more than just an author of children's books. He took a leap of faith in his writing career without even a degree in literature. Milne's hard work paid off as he became famous as a playwright, novelist, poetic author and, above all, children's author for his highly successful Winnie-the-Pooh series. He used a simple yet intrinsic voice that helped him define and shape each line and character. Works Cited "Alan Alexander Milne". YourDictionary and Web.
