Identity theft is a serious and important problem that needs more recognition than it currently has. Identity theft happens when bad people go around and try to steal your identity. If they are successful and have stolen your identity, they can purchase items and you will be charged. They can also ruin your credit history and reputation with your identity. Identity theft happens every day, and many people are affected by it on a daily basis. If your identity is stolen, it could take years to get all your stuff back. Approximately 15 million U.S. residents are affected by identity theft each year. This causes financial losses of approximately $50 billion per year. The average amount of money stolen per victim is $4950! That's a lot of money just being taken out of people with little things they can do to prevent their identity from being stolen. The most common age range for identity theft is 18 to 24. The 18-24 age groups hold over 20% of all stolen identities. Did you know that approximately 6% of adults are affected by identity theft?
