The purpose of team building is to solve a problem or issue through the use of diverse ideas and solutions. There are many moments in life, whether at work or school, when you encounter a diverse mix of personalities. Workplace diversity is everywhere, from the small business to the Fortune 500 company, and it is one of the most important challenges facing companies today. This mix of different personalities, genders, races, experiences and cultures is what makes a successful team. This is an example of a diverse team. On the other hand, a team with the same, or homogeneous, composition has limitations in terms of creativity, points of view and ideas. This paper will examine cultural diversity and demographic characteristics, specifically age, gender, skill/experience, and how each plays an integral role in building a high-performing team. Cultural diversity is an essential piece of the team building puzzle. As stated previously, a diverse team usually equals a successful team. A culturally diverse team brings obvious cultural differences in language, dress, and traditions to the table. Furthermore, less tangible characteristics such as moral values are equally, if not more important. These different methodologies and learnings help influence the direction of the team. People of Western culture will have a different set of beliefs and methodologies than those of Middle Eastern or Eastern ethnicity. When team members take the time to learn and understand the moral value of each culture, the result is a solid foundation for the team. High-performance teams take and incorporate these cultural differences and use these different beliefs and values to achieve the team's goal. Demographic diversity is necessary for a team to be successful. A high-performing team not only has these demographics present in the makeup of the team members, but also has the ability to take these distinct characteristics and use these differences to the team's advantage. Each member with different demographic characteristics possesses a unique perspective on various issues. These assorted viewpoints, moral values, and beliefs are what help the team broaden their vision and produce a better outcome. Building a team with diverse backgrounds is just the first step in building a high-performing team. If team members are not willing to accept different views and opinions, the team is likely to fail. The first two demographic characteristics to discuss are age and gender. A generation gap between team members creates a wide range of perspectives and is beneficial.
