In 1849 he completed his studies on cell growth and the reproduction of their division into two cells. He concluded that each cell comes from an already existing cell. A prolific writer, his scientific writings alone exceeded 2,000. Among his books, “Cellular Pathology” was published in 1858 and is considered the root of modern pathology. This work also popularized the third dictum of cell theory: “All cells come from cells.” Virchow was the first to describe and give precise names to diseases such as leukemia, chordoma, ochronosis, embolism and thrombosis. He also coined scientific terms, chromatin, agenesis, parenchyma, osteoid, amyloid degeneration and spine.
