As an undergraduate student pursuing degrees in biological sciences and clinical laboratory sciences, I have gained valuable experience in both clinical and laboratory settings. One summer, I volunteered at The Sharing Clinic, one of the few student-run and operated clinics in the nation, and provided health care to underserved populations in south Omaha, Nebraska. Patients seen at the Sharing Clinic demonstrate financial need while meeting all federal poverty guidelines. While there, I drew blood from patients to screen for diabetes, high cholesterol, and other suspicious conditions so that patients could receive proper education and treatment. Additionally, I volunteered at their sister site, The Respect Clinic, and provided patients with confidential testing and treatment for HIV and other STDs. I learned firsthand how social and economic factors contribute to a community's public health profile and how they influence health inequality within the United States
