The play Oedipus the King, by Sophocles, shares very similar ideas about fate to the film Crash. Destiny is the idea that the outcome of events is out of our control, that your life is predetermined. Both of these works use the idea that you cannot escape your destiny, that it is set and nothing can change it. However, in Oedipus the King, Oedipus believes he can escape or change his fate while the characters in Crash don't even try. In the play, Oedipus the King, Oedipus believes that he can control his destiny, however, he realizes that he cannot therefore try to escape it. Oedipus has a tragic flaw: he does not see the truth and only believes what he wants. When the blind prophet Tiresias tells Oedipus that he is the cause of the curse of Thebes, Oedipus denies any involvement and believes the prophet is wrong. Oedipus does not realize that he is actually the cause of the curse until later in the play, when he can no longer deny his destiny.
