Social Media is defined by Merriam-Webster as “forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)” (Merriam-Webster), and for many Americans it is a method of social interaction often used on a daily basis. It has been found that one in five people use social media at least once a day and that 19% of Americans between the ages of 15 and 54 use sites like Facebook and Twitter(). It is no longer commonplace to send handwritten letters or greeting cards, it is now accepted to write on a wall, send a tweet or take a photo. Although social media has provided today's society with instant forms of communication and ways of connecting, it has also created a new standard of living and caused problems for many groups of citizens in all walks of life and caused society to rethink their use . There are two views on social media. It is a positive addition to society and its benefits outweigh the risks, or that social media causes more harm than good and its use should be limited. Some of the ideas central to the idea that social media is a boon to society today are that social media encourages greater communication with friends and family, provides quick access to breaking news and other information, and helps businesses attract new business and correspond more quickly with existing customers. Increased communication is important in all aspects of life. Staying connected with family and friends is easier than ever. Whether it's a Facebook post or a tweet that updates friends on interesting news or being able to see a picture... in the middle of the paper... and to get information more quickly. I was having a problem with my cable box and instead of calling Time Warner and being on hold, I was able to tweet their support address and get a response and solution within minutes. I believe the key to making social media safe and secure starts with proper use. Illegal and highly discouraged activities should not be tolerated and consequences should be mandatory. In terms of social media use in adolescents and young adults, it is important that parents teach their children what acceptable use of computers and social media is so they can understand the potential danger and all minors should be monitored while using the Internet to ensure safe usage is followed. Regardless of age, all social media users should think twice before clicking the post button about the unintended consequences that post may have.
