People using cell phones while operating a vehicle is a dangerous distraction. This distraction is as dangerous as other illegal actions behind the wheel. Laws must ban the use of cell phones in vehicles to protect those behind the wheel and on the streets. People in today's society are becoming more and more dependent on their mobile devices, and drivers are more distracted than ever. Taking your eyes off the road puts yourself, the passengers in your vehicle, as well as any cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians around you in immediate danger. Some drivers distracted by their cell phones aren't so lucky when it comes to driving safely. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “distracted driving kills nine people, and people seem to know that texting while driving is dangerous, but people continue to ignore how dangerous it really is. “Using your cell phone while driving is risky. Texting and talking on a hand-held cell phone or on speakerphone while driving slows reaction times more than when drunk or high” (Truth). Texting is an action that requires a lot of attention from the road. Texting on a cell phone is not simply sending a text message to a person. “Using a cell phone to text – which includes composing, sending and reading a message or email, and browsing the web – while behind the wheel is fraught with risk” (Updated). The different types of messaging activities on a cell phone are endless. Whatever messaging activity you are doing on a cell phone, you will have the same risk. Teens are very attached to technology, including their cell phones. Chances are, most teens carry their cell phones in the car. “Teen drivers are much more likely to send and receive text messages while driving than adults” (Distracted). It is very important to eliminate these distractions from teen drivers. Being new drivers, teenagers are more inclined to do so
