Summary This document is intended as an introduction to copyright law in the form of a short story. An elementary school teacher illegitimately copies software for educational purposes and is discovered. Issues such as fair use doctrine, copyright law, and computer law are addressed. The analytical section provides a realistic legal defense for the fictional situation that drives the paper. My name is Jason Lee and I teach sixth grade math at Hightstown Middle School in Hightstown, New Jersey. I can't say that I particularly like my job, but I continue to give my best. I love spending time with my students and any occasion where we can all laugh together is nice. Most students who attend school here will continue to work in low-wage jobs for the rest of their lives. The few students who seem to have the potential for a bright future rarely get one. About five years ago, our school received a number of obsolete computers and a small grant to install Internet access from the nearby Armand Hammer Corporation. We turned a classroom downstairs into our first computer lab and the kids can't get enough of it. Very few of them had used a computer before and, of these, few actually owned one. Even today, many kids know what a computer is but don't have the basic knowledge on how to use it. Six months ago, one of our outstanding students, Jake Meyers, told me he wanted to build websites for a living. I was in love with him and decided to help him in the best way possible. We spent our after-school hours for the next month learning HTML together. Jake's first website was about Pokemon cards, one of his many passions. Jake and I created a page for each of his favorite characters, found their photos on the Internet, and published the site on a free server. His next idea was to create original images depicting Pokemon battles, but since our district couldn't afford any drawing software, we couldn't do that. When Jake started to get discouraged, I decided to get my hands on a professional quality program. My wife, who is a secretary at an advertising company, was able to get me a copy of Adobe Illustrator. I installed the program on one of the lab's computers, and once again, Jake and I spent hours designing his imaginary Pokemon shelter..
