Khmer RougeWhat is genocide? Genocide is when a violent crime is committed against groups that intend to destroy their existence (Genocide). Not many know about the Cambodian genocide, committed by the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge, also known as the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK), took control of Cambodia. The CPK founded the Democratic Kampuchea political party in 1976 and administered the country until January 1979. In 1975 the Khmer Rouge declared Year Zero, where all of Cambodia's culture and traditions were abolished or eliminated, while a new revolutionary culture replaced it . This meant that they had to start all over again, as if nothing had existed. All these actions have completely changed Cambodia and to this day they are trying to recover from all the damage done. The Khmer Rouge contributed to Cambodia by completely destroying civilizations and killing an estimated two million people, causing psychological scars that remain in Cambodians to this day. Furthermore, the Cambodian communist movement developed from the country's struggle against the French, and was influenced by the Vietnamese (CambodiaTribunalMonitor). In 1973, with the help of the United States, the Khmer Rouge dropped nearly half a million tons of bombs on Cambodia, killing more than a quarter of a million people. Some of those who lost family members or held grudges joined the Khmer Rouge. They didn't have much choice as they were abandoned or forced to join the movement. By early 1973, approximately 85% of Cambodian territory had been conquered by the Khmer Rouge. Because they were extremely close to Cambodia's full accession, Lon Nol's army was almost unable to react. Anyway... half the paper... more cases died. To this day there are some Khmer Rouge soldiers alive, but no one is asking for justice because they have learned to live with it. According to the Cambodia Tribunal Monitor, Democratic Kampuchea was one of the worst human tragedies of the 20th century. Cambodia was left in very poor condition due to the damage caused by the Khmer Rouge. Most people in Cambodia will definitely be missing one or more family members due to the genocide. Landmines continue to kill people, and there are too many to clear them all at once. Cambodians were traumatized because of this or left with mental illness. This is something that will never be forgotten and will forever remain in history. It's also one of those things where he will never let people fight for justice because the government forbids it. They are forced to carry forward memories of their past.
