People don't have to fly to be heroes, it takes more than that. Many heroes of today are shown to have supernatural powers that cause them to gain amazing abilities, flight, super strength, ability to manifest anything, the list goes on. Our heroes in the present are perceived by the public mindset as having special powers, but there are times when to be a hero you don't need to have all the extra tricks. Thomas, a character from The Maze Runner, is thrown unconsciously and without memory into an unknown place called the Glades, composed of only teenagers who inhabit the area. They will soon discover that the entire place is surrounded by a large wall that closes day and night to protect them from the labyrinth full of demonic machines that will kill on sight. Thus begins his adventure, eager to discover what's out there and willing to become a maze runner, which amounts to being a tribute for the greater good in their little homemade society. Having powers might help you become a hero, but in the dystopian novel The Maze Runner, by James Dashner, his protagonist Thomas shows the hero's journey in a more natural way by crossing the threshold, meeting a mentor, and finally having trials, allies, and enemies. Anyone as brave as Thomas doesn't sit back and watch one of his injured friends get trapped outside as night falls. An injured person outside their safe haven almost equates to imminent death. Thomas instinctively ran to his injured companion to save him, only to find that he too is trapped outside the Glades. "For several seconds, Thomas felt as if the world had frozen in place. A thick silence followed the thunderous boom of the Door closing, and a... middle of paper... not a hero's journey, devoid of of enemies and partners is an incomplete adventure. They provide the obstacles and support for the protagonist to complete the journey he is undertaking. Having the hero's journey cycle composed by Joseph Campbell, demonstrates the complexity of how a hero's growth is defined character by separating himself from his comfort zone and venturing into the unknown. By successfully overcoming the stages, one is defined as a hero. Works Cited Dashner, The Maze Runner New York: Delacorte, 2009. Print.
