Many Americans believe that viewing violence in the media reinforces negative behavior in society, especially among children and young adults. "Since 1955, three thousand studies have been conducted on the link between television and violence; 2,980 of them have found a correlation between the two. We hear little about it because we get most of our news from television" (Peterson). With so much research it must be recognized that there is a problem in America involving sex and violence in the media. We cannot blame all social problems on the media and its portrayal of these problems, but we can educate ourselves, ourselves, to better facilitate healthy lives for our children. “We, as a society, have done this to ourselves,” said psychologist Dr. David Walsh, executive director of clinics and system operations for Fairview Behavioral Services in Minneapolis. “Violence makes the headlines, but violence itself is the result of a society that promotes selfishness, greed, and instant gratification” (Peterson). Violence on public television often catches us in serious debate. Concerned parents fear that viewing inappropriate images presented by the media could corrupt America's youth. They shudder at the idea of our nation's children growing up to become vicious killers because of the brutal violence often seen on TV. Some blame television for most, if not all, of society's and its children's ills. “It actually accounts for about 10% of the violence, which means 90% of it is caused by other things,” says Leonard Eron. “Violence is a multi-determined behavior. It is caused by genetic, biological, physiological, macroeconomic and macrosocial factors, all of which can explain some of the variance.” Understand... half of the document... http://www.apa.org/pubinfo/violence.html"Timeline of violence in the media."
