Activity 1: History of a companyHistory of TescoTesco was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen. In 1919 Tesco sold surplus groceries from a stall in London's East End. The Tesco brand was first introduced in 1924 when the founder, Jack Cohen, purchased tea from TE Stockwell. Jack Cohen then created new labels, using the first three letters of the supplier's name, TES, and the first two letters of his last name, CO, thus creating TESCO. The first store opened in Middlesex, in 1929, and only 18 years later, in 1947, Tesco went public as Tesco Stores (Holdings) Limited. In the same year the first self-service Tesco store opened, which now houses Metro, and the first supermarket arrived 9 years later, in 1956. Jack Cohen resigned in 1973, leaving command to his son-in-law. , Leslie Porter and doctor Ian MacLaurin. Within two months of this appointment, Tesco had seen a 4% increase in market share. Tesco then pushed the boundaries further in 1987, buying Hillards, which owned a chain of 40 supermarkets in the north of England, for £220 million. Seven years later they outbid another supermarket giant, Sainsbury's, to buy Scottish supermarket William Low, which operated 57 stores. Tesco has now consolidated its popularity in the UK, before moving abroad to countries such as Poland, USA, Thailand, Japan and so on. {draw:frame} Commercial activities Tesco is much more than just a supermarket.
