Art Therapy and Animal TherapyAs another wave of enthusiastic, hopeful seniors pack their cars for college, the community that raised them watches them go with nostalgia and anticipation of what these brilliant new adults will do with the talents bestowed upon them and the mountains of opportunities available to them. The students are also full of anticipation: what possibilities await them! As I take my seat with my classmates, I watch my old community fade into the distance and wonder how I will contribute to my community in the future. My professional choices have varied over the years with a colorful thread that intertwines my love for animals, art and people. I intend to major in psychology with a minor in art. My dream is to help people through my compassion and creativity. Art therapy and animal therapy are exciting fields of work hungry for new talent and well-educated, dedicated professionals. My love for these works stems from having witnessed the wrinkled hand of an elderly and infirm woman stroking the soft fur of a dog, immediately lighting up and starting to communicate her first words in years. I also understood the intense relief of the parents of a sick, depressed little girl, whose interest in her works of art sparks a renewed interest in the world around her. My artistic ability, strength in science, love of animals, and passion for improving the lives around me give me daily reasons why I know I am committed to this field. However, the reasons don't stop there. I want to extend my vision to the community, perhaps starting a program in my church community that involves participants bringing small pets on their visits to nursing home residents. I could also involve surrounding youth groups in working on art projects with young people at the local orphanage. Involving the community in such projects opens up new outlets for creativity to flow into a cause I am so passionate about. Additionally, participation can be a healing and nourishing experience for both parties. With my sometimes stubborn determination and enthusiasm for this endeavor, I will be able to involve my community in useful efforts to improve the conditions of many of those who most need assistance.
