Topic > The Effect of Training on Quality Improvement - 1690

An organization faces the ongoing challenge of maximizing profit, enhancing customer value and achieving business growth. The difficult part of this process is finding and retaining the right employees to achieve this goal. Implementing some training program to improve some areas of customer service is better than nothing. Training is the tool that can help achieve this objective and lead to the improvement of the overall quality of the company, its structure and customer satisfaction. Training a workforce to the highest standards will improve product quality, decrease employee anxiety, increase performance and ultimately focus on the customer. Product Training General Motors (2005) offers its employees more than 2000 internal courses under the guise of General Motors University. These courses work to improve employee skills and performance, as well as teach new business practices. Considering the speed at which new product development tools are changing, GM has decided that the best idea is to offer specialized training to produce a product or service to the highest possible standards. Another benefit of GM training is that underperformance during on-the-job training is reduced because the employee already has the basics. GM is committed to “helping employees understand how their individual performance contributes to overall business results” (2005). This process gives the employee the awareness of not just being a cog in a system, but an integral part. The focus of the courses is on critical business functions within GM. Essentially, they are producing a better quality product by ensuring that the employee is qualified in their job. This reduces warranty costs and rework performed by untrained employees. Efficiency in their skills also increases product quality by increasing the productivity of the individual worker or teams. On-the-job training and apprentice-style training can take time. The fact is that most training in this style leads to dual employment. The mentor must therefore have the ability to take on the task and be responsible for the training objectives. Conducting some of the training in the classroom or online can familiarize the employee and shorten on-the-job training time. This "blended" learning helps maintain existing standards and promotes interaction and integration of new employees. Employee Stress and Productivity One of the most effective ways to increase productivity is to alleviate some of the negative effects of fear and anxiety. Some of these negative effects may be physical and increase the frequency of illnesses.
