Changing the World One Eraser at a Time My college plans include attending a two-year college and then earning a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene. I believe I will have a great opportunity to give back to my community in the career I have chosen. As a dental hygienist, there would be many ways to help both adults and children. Time dedicated to volunteering would allow me to be more involved in the life of our community. Our community usually hosts a small health fair sponsored by our local hospital. The services are offered to the public free of charge or for a small fee. The health fair did not include dental health services. I think this would be a wonderful way to promote good dental health. Brochures for all ages on the importance of dental hygiene may be provided. This would also be a great time to encourage and teach children the importance of brushing their teeth. Children could be provided with toothbrushes and toothpaste during this period. Another opportunity to give back to the community could be through the school system. With the financial help of local civic clubs, kits can be prepared for elementary school students. Through the kits it was possible to teach children the importance of taking care of their teeth. I think younger students would respond well to the "Tooth Fairy." The tooth fairy will then be able to teach you the correct techniques for brushing your teeth and flossing. This would be a fun experience for younger students, as well as a fun reminder. Again, students would receive an education and receive service. Another way I believe I can give back to my community would be through my local nursing home. Comfort and not being forgotten are both important to our seniors. Checking with the nursing staff about the status of residents' dentures would be an opportunity to serve. Nursing staff will be able to advise residents who may have minor problems with their dentures.
