“'Racial profiling' refers to the discriminatory practice by law enforcement of targeting individuals suspected of crime based on race, ethnicity, religion or national origin of the individual. (ACLU). Racial profiling is a common occurrence in our culture. Most people don't even realize that this is racial profiling because often in our society people use race as a reason to assume someone has committed a crime. A study conducted at Northeastern University found that “…74.7% of speeders were white, while 17.5% were black. In contrast, according to MSP data, blacks made up 79.2% of searched motorists…” (Ramirez, McDevitt, & Farrell, n.d.). The high levels of disproportionality in black speeder and car searches show how frequently racial profiling occurs in our daily lives. Trayvon Martin was a victim of racial profiling, and neither Martin's supporters nor Zimmerman could deny it. In fact, Democrats saw such blatant racial profiling that their racial profiling bill had another chance to pass. John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat, said: “Although Trayvon Martin's death was not the result of a law enforcement encounter, issues of race and reasonable suspicion of criminal conduct are so closely linked in the mind of the public that his death cannot be separated from the debate over law enforcement profiling..."
