Middle school is a difficult time for girls who are victims of bullying as they try to fit in and figure out who they are. People don't realize that middle school is a time when children are transitioning from childhood into adolescence, which can lead to emotions such as confusion and frustration. Living with a rare birth defect adds additional pressure to a young teenager. They are different physically, and children become more aware of this in their middle school years. This can cause even more bullying and perhaps make the child feel like an outcast. At this age girls are brutal, leaving others out and hurting their feelings just because they aren't like everyone else. This can make it more difficult for girls with birth defects to cope with the transition and stress of middle school. If these girls are bullied just because of some physical difference, it might be worse if they have another defect or disease that causes yet another difference. Middle school girls diagnosed with Polonia syndrome – “described as underdevelopment or absence of the chest muscle on one side of the body and interlocking of the fingers on the affected side” (The Genomics Landscape) – not only face more emotional problems than to the other girls their age, but they also have more physical and immune problems. This article will review basic information about Poland Syndrome, the emotional stories of middle school girls with Poland Syndrome who have gone through stressful times due to their birth defect, and how people with Poland Syndrome are more susceptible to other diseases and defects than others. Every 10,000-100,000 births, one child is born with a congenital defect: Poland syndrome or Poland anomaly.
