The need for food has created one of the most potent diseases in the nation's health today. According to the recent documentary (Silverbush 2012) it shows how obesity and hunger are closely related to each other. Obesity today has taken over what we know about most of the US population. This phenomenon of unhealthy eating begins in children even before they start going to school. Much of today's population lives in the lower-middle class, creating complications when trying to support families with insufficient funds. When it comes time to buy healthy foods for your family, it gets overlooked due to the high prices of fruits and vegetables. Times of scarcity lead the average American to purchase cheap, unhealthy, quick and easy food products thanks to government subsidies. Since food is an essential aspect of life, eating is a necessity without which we cannot live. Americans with limited budgets are forced to purchase mass-produced products. The high demand for food has caused a process in which food production has become degrading to the environment, animals, the quality product itself and consumers. Large livestock farms create large amounts of animal waste which in turn produces harmful air emissions, water pollution and potentially spreads the risk of infections to humans. Billions of tons of polluting pesticides and fertilizers have destroyed waterways, are responsible for causing cancer, foodborne illness, and obesity, and are one of the many causes of global warming (Kallen, 2006). Many Americans are forced to go against the functional aspect of sociology and conform to consuming products that are themselves dangerous to them, resulting in multiple health problems.
