A summary of research into the process used to recruit police officers will be provided. It will also show their current hiring trends and which hiring practices have been successful or unsuccessful. The article will also examine the different methods departments use to train new officers and their values. The police recruiter recruitment process is a vital job for any city, state and federal department. The people recruited could be the next leaders of the department. Most departments seek to attract the most diverse and qualified applicants who want a career in law enforcement. They also look for candidates who are committed to separating their community. Recruiters have a greater attraction of people with the unemployment rate rising. More and more people are returning to school to study criminal law and seeking a career in law enforcement. Recruiters look for people who possess legal knowledge, communication skills, self-discipline and attention to detail. The new recruit should want to continue learning new things while improving their law enforcement training. Recruiters must maintain high standards for hiring police officers because of what the community expects from their law enforcement agency. Most recruiters must abide by the department's code of ethics that each department has established for its officers. This has prompted recruiters to come up with new ways to try to recruit officers. Some recruiters have started looking for top students from universities and other schools. Many departments have developed incentives for hiring new employees so that a recommendation can be made to the department. The preparation process can take three to four months. If the applicant passes the background and interview, they will be given a conditional job offer. The applicant will then have to pass a medical exam, drug screening, psychological evaluations and a computerized voice stress analysis. The entire process normally takes four to eight months. The recruit will be placed in the next police academy. While waiting for the academy, the trainee will travel with a training officer to learn their duties as an officer.
