A spinal cord injury is caused by trauma to the spinal cord that causes complete or incomplete paralysis. A complete spinal cord injury occurs when the spinal cord is completely severed and a person is no longer able to walk. An incomplete spinal cord injury occurs when the spinal cord is still intact, but has trauma to an area caused by a foreign object or bone pressing against the cord without cutting it. Victims of incomplete spinal cord injuries have little hope of ever walking again. The effect that a spinal cord injury has on a person depends on the level of injury to the spine, which is the level of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. A cervical spine injury is the most serious and worst of the three. This is because an injury to the cervical spine causes paralysis from the neck down preventing a person from moving all four limbs, this is also called quadriplegia.
