Topic > Psychology of Adolescent Addiction - 1947

Introduction/ BackgroundThere are various forms of addiction that adolescents and adolescents indulge in. Various researchers have device concepts, theoretical frameworks and models to try to identify the cause of addiction among youth. For example, in a longitudinal study by Hansell and White (1991) and Shedler and Block (1990), results showed no correlation between “drug dependence and adolescents trying to cope with pre-existing psychological distress” (p . 288). In contrast, drug dependence is related to physical and psychological impairments over time (Hansell & White, 1991). Prevalence of Addiction Adolescence is a life stage marked by physical and hormonal changes that influence a person's decision-making range. During this time, teenagers are encouraged to experiment with drugs and other dangerous habits. Research has shown that substance abuse among youth leads to problematic interpersonal relationships, increased automobile accidents, physical dependence, unprotected sex, increased hostility, and increased suicidal ideation (Hansell & White, 1991; Newcomb, Scheier & Bentler, 1993; North, 2012 ).At the onset of drug and substance abuse, adolescents form the habit for experimental purposes (O'Connor, 1997). In most cases, these trials are designed to place adolescents in different peer groups. Recent research indicates that the family system plays a vital role in the direction an adolescent takes with regards to substance abuse (North, 2012; Gunnarsson, 2012). ). Research has shown that adolescents with a single parent tend to have a greater propensity for substance abuse and other delinquent behaviors unlike children who live in an appropriate home environment with both parents present (... middle of paper ...). ://quantum.esu.edu/clubs/psychology/2012/12/04/adolescent-substance-abuse-societys-rising-concern/O'Connor, G.
