Topic > Argumentative Essay: Do Americans Have the Right to Bear Arms

Being a young American I have witnessed many problems of growing up in this great country of ours. We have homeless people who can't find jobs, rising inflation rates, an imbalanced budget, and most importantly, a gun problem. Like any other good guy, I'm worried about being the victim of a random shooting, but at the same time, I want to be able to earn a nice 10 points during hunting season. Guns affect each of us every day. They fill us with fear or make us feel protected. My point is this: Firearms are a problem, but using gun control to abolish them is not necessarily the best solution. By gun control I mean laws that keep firearms off the streets and prevent their purchase. I agree that some form of gun control is needed, but what we really need to focus on is gun licensing and better gun safety. I believe in my constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and I do not believe lawmakers should be allowed to take away this right. Gun control may be a good thing, but if it leads to gun bans, I will fight it until the day I die. Our country was founded on the basis of weapons. Wars were won with weapons and people were protected by weapons. Firearms were so important that they were included in the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. Amendment II It is clear from this amendment that the founders of our country knew in 1791 that firearms had and would continue to play a role in the lives of Americans. Things haven't changed much. Gun control was introduced to protect citizens from criminals and lunatics who shouldn't have guns in the first place. But only 27% of criminals who are in prison for crimes involving firearms obtained them legally (Henderson 23). If criminals can get guns illegally now, how will greater gun control stop them from getting them later? Anti-gun control groups, the most dominant of which is the NRA (National Rifle Association), fear that gun control is the first step toward banning guns..
