Target Corporation v. Wal-Mart Inc. OverviewThis document will provide a summary of Target versus Wal-Mart, Incorporated stores. In the following weeks it will compare the financial performance of these two companies, evaluating circumstances such as the timing of interest accrued, return on equity, return on assets and other factors. This document will present an overview of the exchanges on which shares of both companies are traded. It will also feature characteristics of that particular exchange that may have led to the company being listed there versus another exchange. This summary will also explain the types of securities both Wal-Mart and Target have outstanding, such as bonds, preferred stock, or common stock and then explain the characteristics of those securities and whether they helped the company obtain and raise capital. Where Do Stocks Trade In 1970, Wal-Mart began offering common stock to the public. The stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under WMT. In 1974 they declared their first cash dividend and since then they also began providing shareholders with an annual dividend, paid quarterly (walmartstores.com, 2007). Target company stock is also traded on Target stock, which also trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the TGT stock price and is common stock (target.com, 2006).
