Dorothy West was a writer of novels and short stories. She was born on June 2, 1907 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Isaac West and Rachel Benson West. Dorothy West had no siblings. She was an only child. West's father was a former slave. His father was a wealthy fruit merchant in Boston, Massachusetts. West had many good friends who were writers. Two of them were Harry T. Burleigh and James Weldon Johnson. Dorothy West was influenced by many of her family friends to become a novelist and short story writer. Dorothy West worked hard to achieve her goal of becoming a writer. West wrote his first story when he was 7 years old. West started school at the age of four. She was enrolled in the second grade at the Farragut School in Boston. West attended the Boston Girls' Latin School at age 10. It was one of the best schools at the time. Not to mention that the Boston Girls' Latin School was a school that chose its students carefully. West graduated in 1923. West also earned a diploma from that school. While in school, West continued to write books. not long after graduation he wrote books continuously. He regularly won prizes in competitions held by local newspapers. One of the books he wrote that won an award was "Promise and Fulfillment" at the age of 14. The contest was announced by the Boston Post. A magazine called Opportunity Magazine held a contest in which Dorothy West won second place. by the National Urban League. The book that won the competition was titled The Typewriter. The magazine was announced by the national competition. This also started his professional career. West went to New York to receive the award, she was fascinated by the state's environment.......middle of paper......unfortunately she died in 1994. The book was published in 1995.Two years later the release of the novels, in 1997, a party was held in honor of Dorothy West. For his successes and his career. Many of the famous celebrities were there. Including the First Lady of the time, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Oprah Winfrey. Later that same year, on August 16, 1998, West died. She had no husband or children. He died at the age of 91.
